Daniel Gene Fowler, 58, of Bertrand, Nebraska left us to be in the hands of the Lord June 7, 2019 at CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney, Nebraska with his mother, brothers and sisters at his bedside.
Daniel was born April 11, 1961 in Lexington Community Hospital to Gene and Marilyn Fowler. He was baptized as an infant in the Methodist Church in Lexington, Nebraska. On June 3, 2019 he was confirmed into the Catholic faith by Father Paul Colling in Kearney, Nebraska.
Daniel was born an artist. He started drawing when he was very young and was given several awards while he was in grade school. He abandoned his artwork in high school to become an avid and life-long sports fan. He watched almost all sports from high school to the professionals, and was a living directory of sports statistics.
In the more recent years his artistic interests came back in the form of creating self-taught animation and videos. His animated videos on YouTube received much international interest and praise.
Dan believed there was more to life than money. He believed we all had the potential to possess “7” senses, the confirmed five senses, the sixth sense of intuition, and the most important one, the seventh, is a sense of humor. Dan said, “if you lose your sense of humor it will diminish all the other senses.”
After high school Dan decided to educate himself by doing different jobs in different cities. He worked in Denver, Phoenix, Omaha, Lincoln, Holdrege and Kearney.
Dan loved the mountains. In his teen years he enjoyed going to Vail, Colorado where his family owned an art gallery. He was an avid skier and spent fun days with his family and Nebraska friends on the slopes. Dan and his younger sister Felicia enjoyed exploring every inch of the Colorado Rockies, as well as parts of Utah, North and South Dakota on their many camping trips in the 80’s and 90’s. Once they found a spot for the night (often off-roading it) their ritual was to cook over the campfire while listening to Dr. Demento on the radio. They always had their road trip music and Dan was a big influence on his little sister’s music passion. She will always cherish the laughs and songs that they shared.
In 2006 Daniel and his mother, sister and brother-in-law agreed to let their mother include all of them in starting a café in Bertrand, Nebraska called the “Flippin’ Sweet.” Their mother retired from the business after three years at age eighty five and Daniel, sister and brother-in-law carried on the business in Holdrege and now in Kearney.
Daniel was loved and appreciated more than he knew and will be very much missed.
Daniel was preceded in death by his father Gene Fowler, his grandparents Roy and Effie Fowler and Charles and Dorothy Larson.
Survivors include his mother, Marilyn Fowler of Bertrand, Nebraska; brother, Tom Fowler of San Francisco, California; sister, Melinda Shannon and husband Kelly Shannon of Elkhorn, Nebraska; brother, Richard and wife Nancy Fowler of Omaha, Nebraska; sister, Felicia Fowler-Alexander and husband Jason Alexander of Bertrand, Nebraska; his nephews, Patrick Shannon of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Clancy Shannon of Manhattan, Kansas, Tanner Fowler of Northridge, California and Dashiell Alexander of Bertrand, Nebraska; nieces, Sarah Shannon of Elkhorn, Nebraska and Makinna Fowler of Omaha, Nebraska; also, his Aunt Sally of Lincoln, Nebraska; great niece, Keira Shannon of Elkhorn, Nebraska; great nephews, Jackson and Carter Shannon of Elkhorn, Nebraska, and many cousins.
The family wants to thank the many people who have generously given of their time and themselves for us. All of the effort is most appreciated.
Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Smithfield with Father Thomas Lux and Father Steve Major, Con-Celebrating.
Inurnment will be in Highland Cemetery at Bertrand.
