Verla M. Heun, 84 of Kearney died Friday, Aug. 11, 2017 at Kearney Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at the Kearney Evangelical Free Church. The Rev. Brian Klein will officiate. Interment will be 2:30 pm at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.

Visitation will be 5-7 Tuesday at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney.

Verla was born May 14, 1933 in Sumner, to Claris H. and Edna L. (Brittin) Triplett. She was married to John F. Heun on July 25, 1951 in Broken Bow. He died on Aug. 22, 1978.

The family moved in 1938 to the rural Lexington area where she was baptized at Fairhaven Baptist Church in 1943 and attended South 17 School. She graduated in 1951 from Lexington High School and 1985 from Mid Plains Community College in North Platte.

The family lived in Lexington before moving to Greeley, Colo. They returned to Nebraska, living in Holdrege before moving in 1961 to Gothenburg. She retired and moved to Kearney in 2002.

She had been employed at Northwestern Bell and The Clipper-Herald in Lexington; The Family Life office in North Platte; Gothenburg Memorial Hospital, Gothenburg Family Practice and The Gothenburg Times.

She enjoyed genealogy and had been a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. She also was a member of Friendship BibleStudy.

Survivors include three sons, David (Sherry) Heun, Steven (Karen) Heun and Michael (Jen) Heun, all of Kearney; daughter, Karen (Mike) Struss of Prosser. Additional survivors include 12 grandchildren, Philip (Ericka) Heun, Teresa (Wallace) Harwood, all of Kearney; Jennifer (Kayne) Musil of St. Joseph, Mo.; Brian (Jennie) Theesen of Hastings; Brant (Emily) Theesen of Maryland; Ryan (Karissa) Heun of Lincoln; and Lindsay, Logan, Lance, Mark, Courtney and Natalie Heun, all of Kearney.

She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Allison, Hayden, Josiah, Gabriel, Henry and Asa Heun of Kearney, Hallie, Elijah, Anna, Dylan and Emma Harwood of Kearney; Isaiah, Keilah and Saydee Musil of St. Joseph, Mo.; Reagan and Riley Theesen of Maryland; Allie Theesen of Hastings; and Kaden Schnable; a sister, Marlene (Earl) Kennedy of Broken Bow; nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
