Denzel was born August 24, 1933, at Eustis, Nebraska, the only child of Walter and Verla (Johnson) Mills. He attended rural schools and graduated from Lexington High School in 1951. In 1955, he graduated from the college of Agriculture at the University of Nebraska and then served in the United States Army for two years.

Denzel also volunteered as an ESL helper for the local community college.
