Son of Frank and Laura (Hewson) Sherman.
With family moved to the Lexington area at age 5 years; attended District 6 school, graduated from Lexington High School, 1934.
Married: Sept. 15, 1940, to Carroll Berry in Lexington.
Farmed until 1964, moved to Lexington; purchased the Texaco bulk plant; sold the plant in 1970; house parent at Kearney State College, 1970-1972; returned to Lexington in 1972, worked for Platte Valley Products, retired in 1985; moved to Kearney in 1996.
Activities: member of the church, served on several committees; leader for the Spring Creek 4-H Club, served on the District 6 School Board, past member of the Cosmo Club; enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and attending his sons' sporting events.
Survivors include: his wife; son, Barry of Kearney; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by a son, two brothers, and three sisters.

Walter L. Hammond, 93, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Monday, May 10, 2010, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

He was born June 24, 1916, at Lexington, Nebraska to Bert and Ada (Woodward) Hammond.

Walter attended District #17 rural school through the tenth grade, then graduated from Lexington High School in 1934. He was united in marriage to Myrene Kincheloe on September 4, 1937 at Downs, Kansas. Two children were blessed to this union; Gary and Barbara.

The couple lived their entire married lives on the farm except for ten years when they lived in Lexington. Walter & Myrene were member of Fairhaven Baptist Church until 1996, when they started attending First Christian Church in Lexington, in 2000, the couple became members of the church.

Walter was on the District #17 School Board for several years as well as the the Farm Bureau Board.

He enjoyed playing cards and his harmonica. He bought his trumpet in 1934 and it was played by the next three generations. He had a great sense of humor and loved to play jokes on family and friends. He dearly loved and enjoyed his family. Every morning when he moved to Plum Creek Care Center Assisted Living he would go to the front office to check the corn price for the day, this just started his day.

Survivors include his son Gary (Barb) Hammond of Lexington, Nebraska

Grandchildren: Dick and (Diane) Reed of St. Paul, Nebraska; Peggy (Dan) Griffin of Elba, Nebraska; Penny (Howard) Beck of St. Paul, Nebraska; Pam (John) Baxa of Grand Island, Nebraska; Jolynn Stinehagen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Ken (Rhonda) Hammond of Lexington, Nebraska; Janna (Bruce) Eberle of Grand Island, Nebraska; Chris (Kevin) Jenn of Amherst, Nebraska and Charlene (Eric) Hollister of Grand Island, Nebraska.

Twenty- four great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren, with one on the way.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents;wife Myrene in 2007; two sisters, Ruth Miller and Rachal McKeag; one brother, Warren Hammond; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dick Reed; and one great-grandson, Jesse Hughes.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, May 15, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at Lexington Christian Church with Pastor Kyron C. BeDunnah officiating.

Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 14, 2010, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
